(exerpt 2) from Deity Novel

They ride along, with no destination in mind and begin to slowly get comfortable; Mali now warm beneath Dr. Hamilton’s trench coat begins to fall into a much deserved sleep while Dr. Hamilton continues driving. The road seems to go on forever as they are slowly lulled into a false sense of security– when a voice says from the rear seat of the car…
“I’m glad to see that you can be so light hearted about the deaths of your close friends. I mean you guys really look comfortable here.”
Looking into the rearview mirror Dr. Hamilton recognizes a face that sends terror streaking through his heart like lightning.
“Townes!” He yells, momentarily loosing control of the vehicle– it swerves from one side of the road to the other then back again.
“Hey calm down, where’d you learn to drive?” Townes asks rhetorically.
Now, a bit more under control Dr. Hamilton asks…
“How did you get in here? How did you find us?”
“Aw, sounds like you missed me William. Now…just where on Earth would two fine upstanding citizens like you be headed at this ungodly hour?” He asks cynically.
Mali waking from her half-sleep begins to realize what is happening and starts to panic.
“How did you get in here?” Mali asks grudgingly.
“Mali, you sound upset– aren’t you glad to see me?”
“No.” she answers hatefully.
“Well I’m glad to see you, I’m also glad to see that you and the good Dr. Here have updated your accommodations from that horrible subway tunnel, that place was beneath you-you know.”
“So it was you who was after us all this time?”
“Well who did you think it was? Jesus-who incidentally is a great guy, you really must meet him someday.”
“How do you purpose we do that? He’s been dead for over two thousand years.” Dr. Hamilton adds trying to make the statement sound overwhelmingly stupid.
“Now William you don’t seem to be having much fun. Has it been that long? I’m sorry, I loose track of time so easily these days.
It seems like just yesterday I was tempting Eve in the Garden of Eden. Causing the Black plague and the dark ages, then there was that time I chased you into the police station-and when I tried to warn you in all those dreams…ha, ha, ha-Good times, goo-d times.” He says leaning back into his seat and reminiscing.
“So let me get this straight, are you trying to tell us that you’re Satan? Dr. Hamilton questions surprised, “what have I done to warrant the attention of such a great being?” he asks sarcastically.
“You see? now you’re having fun-that my friend is an excellent question.
Which brings me to why I’m here. You’ve ignored all of my warnings Willy, can I call you Willy? Cause William can be so cumbersome to say.
You see Willy, the big guy sent me down here to try and stop you from spreading all this nonsense of Alien creation.
He said to me, Luci - cause that’s what he calls me-go ye forth and stop Willy from spreading his lies-or something like that, he remarks tossing his hands in the air just slightly as if to suggest an attitude of not caring.
“Lies? If you are who you say you are, then you know as well as I do that I’m not lying.”
“Yeah-yeah, I know, I made that whole thing up about the big guy and all, but the truth of the matter is that I am here to kill you.”
“What?
“Are you serious? Mali questions, fearing for her life.
“No, not really, wow you guys are really gullible. You need to lighten up.
My boys may not be here yet, but in the morning it’ll look like you and Ms. Mali had a fatal car accident and everyone will mourn the loss of the great Dr. William Hamilton and Mali Parone.” He says aping a news commentator.
“But the fun part is…that when you’re gone, no one will even remember why you were so damned important.
Dr. Hamilton and Mali begin to think quickly of a way to escape from the vehicle before they can be killed.
“Don’t even think about trying to escape this car Willy, you knew this was coming, you’re always so fond of saying that you could be removed-well, this is your removal.”
“How did you know I was thinking that?” Dr. Hamilton asks puzzled.
“Have you forgotten who you’re talking to, it’s me Willy ‘Luci’ you know the variable in this whole crazy thing.
“I hope you’re happy Willy, I mean I really do. It’s all because of you that I had to kill Mali’s father, and making that look like an accident was a real challenge.” He adds scornfully.
“Do you have any Idea how difficult it is to make a bullet phase trough a person?” He asks rhetorically and beginning to digress a bit.
“But I guess when you’re the Chief of Internal Affairs you can do whatever you want.”
“Well I guess that explains why you didn’t leave any footprints at the junkyard,” Dr. Hamilton states as he finally starts to put the pieces together.
“That’s right Willy, demons don’t leave footprints.” Townes answers quite proud of himself.
“But what about Captain McNeil? Why is he gone? Why did he have to die?”
“He didn’t have to die,” Agent Townes says with a devilish grin, “he just pissed me off.
It’s like you said Willy…”
“It’s William,” Dr. Hamilton interjects starting to become annoyed.
“Yeah-yeah whatever Willy …telling them would put them in danger.
Well Willy,” he begins “you were right a-gain.
Don’t you just love the feeling you get from always being right? I can tell that you do, I can see it on your face every time you spit-out one of your fancy theories.” Says Townes echoing the look of disgust that can be seen on his face.
“Well I didn’t think…”
“Right again Willy,” He rudely and quite loudly interrupts. “You didn’t think –because if you had thought this whole thing through and maybe listened to some of the warnings that were issued to you, none of this would be happening.
So again Willy, it’s all your fault that McNeil and little big Chief Parone had to die.” He says in his best Native American voice.
So now it’s your turn– you and your precious Mali-poo.” He says now in a cute little baby voice while blinking his eye lashes wildly. “So man-up, and take your medicine like a good Dr.” He says gritting his teeth.
“So are you going to kill us?” Dr. Hamilton asks fretfully.
“No-I’m not, but they are,” he says pointing to an oncoming pair of headlights that slam headlong into their vehicle.
Their bodies are flung forward like rag dolls and the lives they have known come abruptly to an end. The air bags in the vehicle are activated in futility as their fragile human bodies begin to break.
The sounds of glass breaking and metal being twisted and torn apart precedes the horrific explosion caused by the collision. Shards of glass and metal are sprinkled through the air like blood soaked confetti on New Year’s Day.
The force of the crash combined with that of the explosion sends Mali, Dr. Hamilton and Agent Townes sailing face first into a nearby field. Their necks are forced backward in the most unnatural position imaginable and they are killed instantly.
The fire burns out of control for hours as the three bodies lay broken and charred. The smell of burning flesh permeates the air and it seems that Dr. Hamilton and Mali are just another pair of motorists whose deaths are no cause for suspicion. Once again Satan’s plan seems to have come to fruition.
The wind blows across the site of the crash as a subtle stirring in the grass and a heavy gasp for life giving air is made by the Agent sometimes known as Townes.
His well made black on black suit is torn and tattered-not to mention dirty and soaked with the blood of Mali and Dr. Hamilton. This certainly is beyond any standard of measurement that Townes has for his appearance.
His body is mangled and unrecognizable and his legs lay twisted beneath him.
Almost every bone in his body has been broken but still he manages to stand. He takes a second to collect himself and takes note of his injuries; he then takes a deep breath and tightens his muscles around his broken frame. The sounds bones of cracking and being realigned echo through the open space, as he diligently begins to repair himself.
“That’s better.” He says to himself as he makes his way back to the road. He stands for a moment, now visibly upset at the condition of his suit and states to himself in utter disgust, “You can do better than this.”
He raises his hand above his forehead and washes it quickly in front of him and in the blink of an eye the suit is as good as new.
At the end of the road the sun begins to rise and the Agent known as Townes slowly walks toward it.
The sound of his leather shoes against the hard pavement is heard once again as he slowly vanishes from sight.
The bodies of Mali Parone and Dr. William Hamilton lay alone in the field in which they were thrown.
And at a time just before dawn a large air borne craft becomes barley visible from behind the mountains at the end of the road where the lone Agent has recently vanished.
Light seems to bend around the object as it can scarcely be seen, it bears a marking that is reminiscent of early depictions of beings known as seraphs - the only part of the craft that is boldly visible. The markings seem to soar unassisted giving the appearance of a lone Angel curiously inspecting the most recent site of human folly.
It darts back and forth in the fiery red sky until it reaches the site of the crash. It hovers silently for a moment and in an instant the bodies vanish into it. And the craft itself also vanishes.
